Attention Pink Ladies and T-Birds, Sandy and Danny are reuniting at the Senate Theater! Come see the beloved musical Grease (1978) as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen in a theater full of fans. A 1950’s Pop-Up Shop featuring Flamingo Vintage and other vendors will be bringing poodles skirts and more to round out a truly retro evening. We’ll be handing out prizes for best dressed at intermission so bring your poodle skirts and bomber jackets!

After a fleeting summer romance on the beach, Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) begin the school year at Rydell High still dreaming of their lost summer love. The story follows Sandy, Danny, and their friends (the T-Birds and Pink Ladies) through the school year, chronicling Danny and Sandy’s attempts to rekindle their love and the struggles of teenage life in the 1950’s. Adapted for the big screen from the 1971 Broadway smash-hit of the same name, Grease was a critical and commercial darling. It remained the highest-grossing live-action musical in the United States until 2017. It is no surprise that the original soundtrack was the second-best selling album of 1978 considering iconic songs like the Academy Award-nominated “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Summer Loving.”

Episode 5 of Showtime at the Senate is LIVE! This week, I talk with Flamingo Vintage Detroit proprietress, Nikki Neuzil, and film aficianado Finn Formica about Grease (1978), shopping vintage, and 50's fashion.

Did You Know?

Grease was the highest-grossing live-action musical until 2012 when it was overtaken by Les Misérables and the US champion until 2017 when it was surpassed by Beauty and the Beast.

Olivia Newton-John, who was already a Grammy-winning pop and country singer in 1978, could not convincingly speak with an American accent, so Sandy was re-written to be Australian.
